Life for schoolchildren in Britain changed spectacularly after the war began in 1939. Hundreds of thousands of children were evacuated to the countryside where they experienced new schools, teachers, lessons, friends, homes, and new ways of doing things. The children that were left in the cities, endured years of intense bombing, which greatly affected their schooling and the way they spent their spare time.
